Crossposted from North Decoder

I have word that Rick Berg called Heidi Heitkamp at noon Central time to concede the election and congratulate her on winning the race. Sources confirm North Dakota Congressman Rick Berg will be appearing before the Fargo Cass Republicans at 12:45 pm today to announce he is conceding the race for the United States Senate to former Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp. Heitkamp's campaign, which fivethirtyeight blogger Nate Silver characterized as a sure thing for Berg, was a perfectly executed masterpiece, run by first rate professionals. I know because I consider many of them to be friends.

You read it here first.

10:44 AM PT: I'm hearing people tell me that Berg has just publicly conceded on TV.  I''ll keep you posted.

10:45 AM PT:

10:46 AM PT: Ed Schultz on Facebook:

10:59 AM PT: Heidi Heitkamp on Facebook:

Just got off the phone with Rep. Berg. I thanked him for his service and for being a part of our great democratic process.

I know a lot of people on both sides of the aisle worked very hard in this election. I am so grateful for the people who gave me their votes and this victory.

I make this promise to every North Dakotan: I will be a senator for each and every one of you. We did this together and I am so grateful to everyone on team HH4ND

11:12 AM PT: And finally a newspaper catches wind of the story an hour later...

11:39 AM PT: Bismarck Tribune:

11:57 AM PT: Heitkamp just sent this out to her supporters:

Thank you. We did it!

I can’t thank you enough for all you did to make me the next U.S. senator from North Dakota.

We pulled off a win no one thought we could. The experts said we didn’t have a chance.

Thankfully, you refused to believe it. You put your energy into action and we ran the greatest grassroots campaign in North Dakota’s history.

We did it! It was a close election, and every vote mattered.

We overcame all the attacks from people outside our state who thought they knew best. I am so grateful to you for fighting it out to the finish.

Let me also take a moment to thank Congressman Rick Berg for his service. It was a close, hard-fought campaign. I am so grateful to the people who gave me their votes and this victory.  But I also know there are many people in our state who did not vote for me.

Now, I make this promise to every North Dakotan: I will be a senator for each and every one of you.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for giving me the opportunity.

11:59 AM PT: And finally, a press release from Rick Berg:

“Tracy, Jack and I thank all of our hard working and dedicated grassroots supporters throughout North Dakota who committed their time, effort, and heart into this campaign. We are truly blessed for the opportunity to work alongside our fellow North Dakotans over these past several months, and are humbled by the trust they invested in our campaign and our vision for a better future.

“With the ballots left outstanding, we see no reason to believe that the result of this election will change over the course of the official certification process. With that, I concede this election and congratulate Heidi Heitkamp, her family, staff and supporters on a hard-fought campaign.

“Our problems aren’t solved by conducting an election. Our challenges don’t go away at the ballot box. Our country remains in need of real solutions to the problems we face, and I am hopeful and optimistic that the leaders we elected last night here in North Dakota and throughout our country will rise to meet them. I encourage those on both sides of the political debate to support our elected officials as they make the necessary tough decisions to put our country back on track and restore the promise of the American dream.”

Thu Nov 08, 2012 at 8:18 PM PT: Wow, the wreck list AND the Election Diary rescue.  Thanks, folks!  Glad to be of service.

Tagging tips - Search For Tags - Browse For Tags

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.
