My Mom, who was born and raised in North Carolina, taught me never trust a preacher. She came from that part of Appalachia that only appears in old documentaries. These are the poorest of the poor. She told stories of the Preacher Men who came to visit every summer. They would set up the big tent and preach late into the night about hellfire and damnation. They were fire and brimstone and some faith healing to boot. Someone would suddenly walk without crutches. Someone would scream "I can see, praise Jesus, I can see!" These desperate people would take their last few pennies to those damn tents. They would beg for cures for their family. They believed.
Later when the tents were packed up and the "preachers" moved on. They took the money but they also took people's faith. My mother saw first hand the damage done by false prophets. She never put much stock in organized religion because of these traveling side shows. When the televangelists came on television, she would shout at the television screen. She was a Christian woman – she just wasn’t a sap. She believed in God but not in preachers.
Mr. Huckabee, I caught your show last night. I hear you have renamed the Stimulus Bill
Congressional Relief Action Program (CRAP)
That got you lots of laughs. Now I'm watching you read letters from viewers you asked to write in and tell how they’d spend the extra cash from the stimulus bill. It made me cringe, my Christian brother. I listened while you made fun of people who really could use and extra ten for fifteen bucks a week. You know, people who are struggling to hang on to one home. You probably don’t know any Republicans with that problem. Most of them can't even remember how many houses they own (McCain). Or they charge the state a per diem just to stay home from work (Palin). Go ahead; make fun of those of us who are poor. Those who could buy milk and bread to get through the last week in the month. Those who can give the kids lunch money with the extra cash. Those who could use an extra couple of gallons of gas to get to work. Those who might be able to afford medicine with and extra ten or twenty bucks. Go ahead ridicule us. But just remember, Mr. Preacher man, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.' (matthew 25:45)
Jesus said that. What do you suppose he’d think of you?
I pray for you, Mr. Preacher man.
Preacher man Mike Huckabee asked everyone to write in and tell him what we'll do with our extra cash. I think we should tell him.
